You will be notified in the event of a terrorist attack, a tornado, or a child abduction, if you have a cell phone. Emergency alert text messages will soon be coming to your cell.

The Federal Communications Commission has approved a national plan. Phone companies will voluntarily take part in the system, that will send alerts to subscribers.

So far, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint Nextel and AT&T have all said that they would use the system.
